The town examination results are released. A young man, Xiaocai (Wang Xiangqin), announces to Xu Ren Chen Tianxiang) that his son, Yulang (Huang Yiliang), has passed with flying colours. Congratulatory messages from the Xu's relatives and friends begin to pour in. Xu Ren's in - law, Lu (Tang Hu), brings along gifts for the Xus as well. While everyone is congratulating Yulang, Xiaocai returns with the message that he has made a mistake and that Yulang has failed the examination. Xu Ren faints and Yulang is numb with shock. Their relatives and friends start to leave. After chiding Yulang, Lu leaves, but not before forgetting to ask his servant to bring back the gift. When Xu Ren regains consciousness, he expresses his disappointment with his son. Yulang begs his father for forgiveness and promises to do better the next time. However, Xu Ren comments that he has suffered enough humiliation. Filled with self - pity, Yulang walks to a river, intending to commit suicide. He is rescued by Xiaocai and they become friends. Yulang learns that Xiaocai comes from a poor family of farmers. He lives with his parents, Tian and Mrs Tian (Dai Peng and Zhang Jinhua), his brother, Fa (Tang Wengtao) and sister, Hua (Chen Fengling). One day, a matchmaker goes to the Tians with a marriage proposal for Hua. When Xiaocai's parents learn that the prospective son - in - law is from a wealthy family, they immediately agree to the proposal. To celebrate the occasion, Tian sends his son, Fa, to buy wine. The honest Fa ends up being cheated by the wine seller. Xiaocai decide to teach the wine seller a lesson. After settling scores with the win seller, he meets a storyteller, Zhang Guang (Bai Yan). They enter into an argument over a minor matter. Zhang Guang is so furious that he replaces Xiaocai's wine with tea without the latter's knowledge. On reaching home, Xiaocai realizes that he has been tricked. Xiaocai later learns from his parents that they will be renovating their old house with the dowry money and that the prospective in - laws are the Lus, Xiaocai is curious as the Lu family is the richest in town. Disguising himself as a scholar, he visits the Lus and learns that Lu's son, Tiancong (He Qitang), is mentally retarded. He quickly informs his parents. Hua is upset and refuses to marry Tiancong. However, her parents have already spent all of her dowry, thus leaving her with no choice but to marry him. Lu and his wife (Chen Meiguang) also have a daughter, Huiniang (Chen Xiuhuan). Huiniang has been betrothed to Yulang from birth. However, her father looks down on Yulang as the latter has failed to pass his examination. Lu tries to back out of the marriage agreement but Yulang refuses to let him. Yulang resents his future father - in - law for his snobbish attitude. When Xiaocai learns of it, he offers to arrange for Yulang and Huiniang to meet. Huiniang accompanies her mother to a temple to pray.
